WEIGHT OF JOURNEY
2025
Reclaimed table, copper objects cast from recycled metal, electronics, realtime sound synthesis, speakers
Weight of a Journey is an interactive sound sculpture that brings together conductive drawing, metal casting and digital sound. The tabletop becomes both a physical score and an instrument, inviting visitors to explore sound through touch, pressure, and movement.
The small copper objects on the table are called worry-stones or palm-stones, and are made to be held in the palm to relieve anxiety. Visitors can pick up and hold them, feel their weight, and move them across the drawing. Touching the golden dots on the table surface with fingers or placing a stone between a dot and a neighbouring line activates sound. Different placements of objects and combinations of touch create changing soundscapes, blending digital synthesis with field recordings.
Made from reclaimed electronic waste, the palm-stones carry traces of earlier uses and transformations. The lines on the table evoke the paths materials take through the universe, earthly landscapes, technologies, and human hands. Through listening and play, the work invites reflection on our place within these ongoing material journeys.
I am using this table also as an instrument in live sound performances.
The work was first exhibited in group exhibition "Unfolding Island Ecologies", that took place in HIAP Suomenlinna Augusta Gallery in 2025.
